Tech Innovations -- The Changing Face of Technology
[excerpted from the April 2002 issue of Business Advantage]

The fast-paced world we have come to live in during the last 15 years of the 20th century was led, as usual, by our capacity to absorb technological advances.  These advances have spurred most everything else in some manner, fashioning a world at breakneck speed as the 21st century unfolds.

Locally, area experts within their own fields of expertise make comment on the latest in technological advances that have captured our imagination -- and pocketbooks.

For Jeannine Taylor, owner of Quid Novis Internet Productions, there are a "number of trends in internet delivery and the growth of technology."

Business Advantage, April 2002 "Keeping pace is essential in our industry.  To apply the question locally, I think the most significant upcoming trend will be wireless access, and the delivery of web sites by portable devices and phones. . We have yet to see huge demand in Central Ontario, but I know it is on the horizon with wireless access and speed increasing.  You will be asked to deliver your web site by a wireless device.  Your web developer will become your WAP {wireless applications protocol) developer."

Taylor said that the "most significant trend for Quid Novis is that corporations are redeveloping older web sites that do not meet their requirements."

"An older web site tends to be text based, lacks interactivity, and does not meet content demand.  It is common that a corporate site was developed internally or in a rush to have a presence online during the late nineties.  More than half of our projects are redevelopments of existing sites.  We are also frequently commissioned to complete web site auditing by both corporations and design or communication agencies.  Our web site auditing process is unique and thorough; we examine everything from site design and navigation to security -- a web site audit can save a company thousands of dollars long term prior to a redesign.  We recently completed an audit for the City of Hamilton," said Taylor.

Taylor said that with the use of both dial-up and broadband in full swing now, "sites should be easily available for all speeds, or provide the viewer with the option of a low or high speed connection."

"Ask your web developer to test your site and advise you of the download speeds.  You have 15 to 30 seconds to capture your viewer's attention. It is also essential to test in multiple browsers (including Netscape, Explorer, AOL, Opera) and on multiple platforms (PC, MAC)."

Taylor said it is critical to not assume that your viewer is on the same speed and browser you use.
